Types of Animals Helped. Dogs and cats have been the kinds of animals that are usually available at shelters. Over the years, others have become more common. People have found exotic animals easy to purchase at local pet stores. The responsibility becomes too much, and they offer the animal to a shelter. People move more often than in past generations, as well. They discover they can’t take their pets with them, so they bring those to the shelter. Rabbits, rodents, birds, and reptiles have all lived at shelters. Shelter workers have helped provide temporary care and housing when an unusual stray animal like a snake or llama appears in the community. The first thing they do is try to locate the owner of any stray animal they encounter. After that, the animal usually becomes available for adoption.
